In my time in the industry, I have seen or heard about different trends, new and exciting discoveries, etc. Some stay, some go, while some resurface again; it’s one of the reasons I love the aesthetics industry, it is very dynamic. However, there are professional techniques and ingredients that are tried and tested and have been used for decades with a lot of research to support their benefits. Today, on my new blog post I mention three: Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and sunscreen. To be clear, I am by no way saying these are the only treatments you would need to achieve healthy skin. There are other important factors that contribute to the skin’s health, like exfoliation, cleansing etc. I choose these three to discuss today, because I consider them pillars for healthy skin, and I have observed my clients benefit from all three after long term use, a short phase in their life, or during periods of skin treatment. They have seen improved skin health, and a glow to their skin after consistent use in a skin program.
VITAMIN C: A popular antioxidant for several reasons. It functions as a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals and combats external aging factors such as environmental pollutants, sun damage, smoking and poor nutrition. Vitamin C is essential and fundamental for any skin regimen. Vitamin C is not able to be created by the body, so it is necessary that we receive exogenous sources, both ingested and topically. Research has shown that vitamin C acts as a collagen biosynthesis regulator and when formulated into proper carriers (and prescribed appropriately) it can brighten the skin. There is also research indicating the use of vitamin C with sunscreen can result in prolonged sun protection. This antioxidant comes in different forms with the most popular being ascorbic acid, a water soluble form. There are different forms, strengths and formulas that are also effective. The key here is to get a skin consultation with your skincare professional that will prescribe the appropriate one for you.

VITAMIN A: VITAMIN A is arguably one of the most essential bio-intelligent vitamins. It is critical for skin health, as it regulates skin function and plays a major role in the majority of common skin challenges. Vitamin A comes in a variety of forms and has been proven in a variety of clinical studies to be capable of reprogramming cellular functions. This antioxidant also regulates keratin to help improve skin’s texture, firmness and tone. Continued deficiency shows a degeneration of dermal tissue, and the skin becomes thick and dry while continued use of Vitamin A in a regular skincare program, the composition of the skin can be significantly transformed. As mentioned above, it comes there are different types of Vitamin A available from prescription, professional to over the counter and a range of strengths. When purchasing over the counter, make sure you look at the formula carefully. For prescription strength and professional vitamin, A, contact your dermatologist or aesthetician for guidance on what is compatible with your skin and how to incorporate it into your program.

SUNCREEN: Sunscreen is a great way to protect yourself from the sun’s dangerous rays. It provides both UVA and UVB protection. Without the protection of sunscreen, the UVA rays can lead to photodamage of the skin , premature aging . While exposure to UVB can lead to sun burn , melanoma and hyperpigmentation of the skin. Everyone should use sunscreens daily, non -negotiable. With technology, there are now options for darker complexions that is comfortable to wear that leaves zero white cast on the skin. The key is finding a formula that is not irritating to your skin, comfortable to wear and reapply with the right spectrum coverage. You should ask your dermatologist or licensed aesthetician to help narrow down the options. P.S also wear protective clothing and avoid excessive sun exposure as much as possible.
