ONE LOVE ORGANICS: VITAMIN C BODY OIL AND VITAMIN C BODY POLISH

April 24, 2016

Most people know that intake of vitamin C is good for your immune system and I am sure you have also used products with vitamin C formulated in it or have used it on its own. Before I go into the product review, I thought it would be valuable to briefly look at the what and why of vitamin C.

Vitamin C also known as ascorbic acid, and its derivatives are antioxidant vitamins needed for proper repair of skin and tissue. It has skin lightening properties, promotes the production of collagen in the skins dermal tissue and aids and promotes the skin’s healing process. L ascorbic acid is the most popular form of vitamin c used in products and it is can boost the effectiveness of other antioxidant used with it or when used on its own in concentrations of 15% or higher. There are different forms of ascorbic acid i.e. sodium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl palmitate also referred to as Ester C, retinyl ascorbate, tetrahexldecyl ascorbate and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate.  For the benefit of this review would like to further explain Ester C.

Vitamin C Ester is joined by a chemical ester bond with a fatty acid derived from palm oil. It is oil soluble and depending on the formulation can be absorbed into the skin much more easily than water soluble ingredients. It is said to promote a visible renewal of the skin appearance, resulting in skin looking brighter, healthier and firmer.

BENEFITS OF VITAMIN C

  • Reduces hyperpigmentation

  • Fades acne scarring by improving skins healing response

  • Boosts collagen

  • When combined with sunscreen it allows for long lasting broader sun protection against UV exposure

  • Brightens skin and gives a healthy glow.

PRODUCT REVIEW: ONE LOVE ORGANICS VITAMIN C BODY OIL AND VITAMIN C BODY POLISH

VITAMIN C BODY OIL

WHAT IT IS

It is a moisturizer, and a luxury skin refiner, Vitamin C Body Oil features facial-grade ingredients blended specifically for the body. Its active ingredients are vitamin C ester, papaya enzymes which exfoliates and organic shea oil for moisture.

INGREDIENTS

Butyrospermum parkii (shea) oil, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, hydrogenated vegetable oil, camellia sinensis (green tea) seed oil*, lactobacillus/papaya fruit ferment extract (and) carica papaya (papaya) seed oil, tocopherol, ascorbyl palmitate, fragrance/parfum

SKIN TYPE

Most people could use this but I would not recommend this to anyone with body acne. The shea oil could aggravate the condition.

HOW TO USE IT

After a shower, apply on skin focusing on areas that need treatment or are exposed during the course of the day.

PROS:

It leaves your skin moisturized and despite the fact that it is an oil, it absorbs easily without leaving tacky or greasy feeling on your skin.  With continuous use my skin began to look more even toned and had an amazing glow. It has a noticeable scent of citrus and a hint of vanilla, but it fades considerably within the hour.

CONS:

First the concentration of Ester Vitamin C in this product is not mentioned anywhere on the packaging or the website and personally I feel it is vital information the customer should have in order to make an informed purchase. Finally, for the price I expected to have more, especially when It’s meant to be used all over your body. It runs out pretty fast. No Bueno!

VERDICT

I discovered the “One Love Organics” brand about two summers ago. I had mild hyperpigmentation around my shoulder area from too much sun exposure.  I wanted something organic, mild but effective enough to even out my skin tone. I looked far and wide for a good vitamin c cream formulated without harsh chemicals but had no luck until I came across the one love organics brand Vitamin C body oil.

At first I was skeptical; it sounded too good to be true and liked all the ingredients except the shea oil because some grades of shea butter actually irritate my skin causing me to itch uncontrollably, so I decided to pass on it. While researching, I had a minor burn on my left hand from cooking and it left me with a small dark scar. At this point I had no choice but to purchase this oil and give it a try; at least test it on the scar. After two weeks of using the oil on the scar I was utterly surprised that scar had faded drastically and I had no irritation as well.  Needless to say I started apply it all over my body and have been using it since then with fantastic results.

PACKAGING

Good packaging.  It comes in an opaque amber bottle which prevents oxidation, leaving the oil fresh from start to finish. However, I would recommend storing this in a dry cool cabinet when not in use.  It is not bulky so it’s easy to pack, and the pump comes with a stopper that prevents any leakage when you travel which is really nice.

REPURCHASE?

Yes, I would repurchase.

ONE LOVE ORGANICS VITAMIN C BODY POLISH

WHAT IT IS

‘A rinse-able Vitamin C Body Polish. It features an ultra-concentrated combination of Vitamin C Ester, aloe, shea and raw, organic sugar crystals to deeply exfoliate and hydrate for supremely soft, luminous skin’.

INDGRIEDENTS

Sucrose, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, glyceryl behenate, glyceryl caprylate, polyglyceryl-3 palmitate, butyrospermum parkii (shea) oil, tocopherol, ascorbyl palmitate, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, fragrance/parfum, dehydroacetic acid (and) benzyl alcohol (and) water/aqua/eau.

SKIN TYPE

All skin type. (It is also safe to use during pregnancy and post pregnancy)

HOW TO USE

It can be applied on wet or dry skin for more intensity . I usually use it twice a week ,  after cleansing I  apply the polish all over , paying more attention to elbows, knees and upper body. Rinse with warm water and pat down with towel.

PROS:

When I am done, my skin feels smooth and moisturized. Besides being a great polish, the other great thing about this Polish is it does not leave your bathtub/shower slippery and greasy.  The scent is heavenly, the bathroom is left with a citrus delicious scent and it lingers for a while. The jar is easy to travel with but when I am in Nigeria, because of the humidity, I store it in a refrigerator to maintain its form and efficacy; also the cool feeling of the scrub on your skin after a long, stressful, hot and sticky day is refreshing.

CONS:

Honestly there is no negative with this product I just wish for a bigger jar. Fingers crossed!

VERDICT

This is an awesome sugar body Polish.  Generally, sugar scrubs have smaller exfoliating granules than salt so they are generally less abrasive. Once applied it stays on your skin allowing you to massage the product into your skin unlike other grainy scrubs that fall apart it minute you scoop it out the jar and when rinsed it emulsifies into a milky substance.

PACKAGING

The packaging of the product is okay. It comes in an opaque amber coloured glass jar which keeps the polish fresher longer, but it has a screw on top. I prefer my scrubs being in tubes so I was a little concerned that it would oxidize with constant exposure to air, and the vitamin c would lose its effectiveness before I get through half of the product. But it never changed its colour, though that could be because I was very diligent about closing it, once I took the product I needed, and storing it in my cabinet.

REPURCHASE?

A resounding YES! I would repurchase.

If anyone has used any one of these products please let me know what your experience and if you have any suggestions I would love to hear from you. Thanks.
